Maliram Saini

My name is Maliram Saini and we are over at 69, Navi Chal Bazar Peth. It’s in the New Chawl area. If you know the Bazar Peth, you know it’s a tight squeeze with all the shops and people. Our place is right in the thick of it. It is a traditional market setup. We don’t have much space, so we have to be very organized with how we stack things. The building is old, like most things in Navi Chal. It has a lot of character, I guess you could say. We’ve seen the market change over the years. Some shops go and others come in. We just stay here doing our thing. It’s mostly about buying and selling. We don’t have a website or any of that stuff. People just know to come to number 69. The days can be long, especially when the market is crowded on weekends. We drink a lot of tea and talk to the neighbors. It’s a very local way of doing business. We don't use big words or have a mission statement. We just want to make a living and be fair to the people who come to us. That’s how it’s been since we started here in the Chawl. Usually, my cousins help out when we get a big delivery, and we just make it work. It's not always easy, but it's what we know. We close up when the sun goes down.
