Our place, Rb Exports, is at No. 101 on Solaiamman Koil Street, right near T. H. Road in Kodungaiyur. It’s a busy corner of the neighborhood. Most days start with the sound of packing tape being pulled off the roll. That screeching sound is basically the soundtrack to my life at this point. We deal with a lot of boxes and crates here. The floor is concrete and usually covered in bits of cardboard and plastic wrap by noon. Since we are so close to T. H. Road, there’s always a truck or a van idling outside waiting to load up. The air in Kodungaiyur can get a bit heavy with the humidity, so we keep the big doors open to catch whatever breeze comes down Solaiamman Koil Street. I don’t wear a suit or anything; it’s usually just a t-shirt and work pants because things get dusty fast in this line of work. We have a small area where we keep the records, but most of the space is taken up by whatever we are shipping out that week. I spend a lot of time checking labels and making sure the weights are right on the scales. It’s physical work and my hands are usually pretty rough by the end of the week. We aren't a huge operation, just a few of us making sure everything gets where it needs to go without getting damaged in the process. It’s a lot of repetitive work, but it keeps us busy.
