Stree Fab

Stree Fab is located right across from the Marathi School in Laxmi Nagar on Ved Road. During the day, we can hear the school bells and the kids playing outside, which makes the neighborhood feel very lively. We work with fabrics and do a lot of tailoring and stitching here. There is always the hum of sewing machines going on and you will find scraps of colorful cloth all over the floor by the end of the shift. We try to sweep up but it’s a constant battle. Most of our work is done while sitting on the floor because it is easier to cut the large rolls of cloth that way. The lighting in the shop is just a few big bulbs we hung over the main work tables. Surat is famous for this kind of textile work, so we are just one of many small shops in this area. We don’t have a big glass storefront with mannequins. It’s just a regular workspace where the actual sewing happens. The tea guy from the corner brings us chai twice a day and that is when we usually take a short break to rest our backs. Sometimes we have to work late into the night if there is a big order for a festival or a wedding coming up. It’s honest work and it keeps our days full from start to finish.
