The shop is located on Bamroli Vadsar Road, right in the GIDC Makarpura area, unit 110. Since we are in the industrial zone, most of the people who come in are workers from the nearby factories. They usually need a quick mobile recharge or a new pair of earphones because their old ones got ruined at work. The space is pretty basic, with a few posters on the walls and a long glass counter that I wipe down every morning. I’ve got a computer that stays on all day for processing the recharges and a few stools for people to sit on while they wait. The road outside is always dusty from the trucks, so I have to keep the front door half-shut sometimes. I’ve been here long enough that I know a lot of the guys by their first names. We talk about the shifts at the plants or how the road construction is going. I keep a small fridge in the corner for cold drinks, which is popular when the afternoon heat gets bad. It’s not a quiet place, as there’s always the sound of machinery in the distance. I usually stay open a bit later than the other shops because that’s when the night shift workers are heading in. It’s just me and the phone screens most of the time in this industrial pocket.
