If you look for Saffron Engineering, you have to go to the 2nd Floor at Mitra Mandal Chowk 7 in Pandesara. Being on the second floor means we have to carry everything up the stairs, which is a bit of a workout every single day. The workshop is a bit cramped. We have machines bolted to the floor and bits of scrap metal in bins under the tables. The windows stay open to let out the smell of oil and hot metal, but it’s still pretty strong. We spend most of the day looking at blueprints or grinding down parts. It’s noisy and messy. There’s always a layer of fine metal dust on the windowsills. We don't have a reception area or anything like that. If you come in, you just walk straight into where the work is happening. The walls are covered in calendars from three years ago and some old tools hanging on hooks. We drink a lot of coffee to keep going during the long shifts. People come to us with broken parts or designs they need turned into something real. We just do the work as it comes in. It’s a gritty, honest kind of place. We’ve been here at Mitra Mandal Chowk for a good while, and most people in the local industry know where to find the stairs to our shop. We just keep working until the job is done.
