In A Embroidery Factory

If you walk down the lane behind the Mahadev Temple in Udhanagam, you’ll find us in Gayatri Society-2. It’s an embroidery place, so you’ll hear the machines running most of the time. The sound is just part of the background now. Surat is full of places like ours, but we’ve been in this specific spot for a good bit of time. The temple is a good landmark because otherwise, all these streets look the same to someone new. We have a few guys working the machines and others checking the threads. It gets dusty, and the heat in the summer makes the metal machines even hotter, but we keep the fans going. We aren't trying to be the biggest factory around. We just take the orders that come in and try to finish them before the deadline. Sometimes the power goes out, and everything stops, which is frustrating, but that’s just how it is here. We sit outside during breaks to get some air. The neighbors know us, and we know them. It’s a tight space with boxes stacked up in the corners, but we know where everything is. We don’t have a big front desk or anyone to greet you. Usually, someone just looks up from a machine if a visitor comes in. We’re just workers doing embroidery in a busy neighborhood, making sure the patterns look right before they head out. There is always a lot of thread on the floor.
