Asha Silk Mills

Our place is called Asha House, located inside the 21st Century Business Center. We are right on Ring Road, near the World Trade Center. It’s a very busy part of town with lots of traffic and people moving around all the time. We work with silk here. It’s a delicate material, so the atmosphere in the mill is a bit different than a heavy industrial shop. We have to keep things relatively clean so the fabric doesn't get ruined. We’ve got looms and machines running most of the day. The sound is a constant hum that you eventually stop noticing. We aren't a giant corporation; we’re just a local mill that’s been around for a bit. We spend a lot of time looking at threads and checking the patterns as they come off the machines. Sometimes the threads break and we have to stop everything to tie them back by hand. It takes patience. The business center is a bit of a maze, but once you find our floor, you’ll see we have quite a lot going on. We don't do much advertising. Most of our work comes from long-time contacts in the textile trade. We just try to produce decent silk and keep the machines in good repair. It’s a lot of daily maintenance and watching the details. We just keep our focus on the fabric and nothing else.
