Mehta Lace is at No. 77 in Jai Industrial Estate 1, over by Anjana Farm. It’s an industrial area, so there are big trucks and noise from other units everywhere you turn. Our unit is right in the middle of it all. We have rows of machines that make all kinds of lace for different uses. It’s a dusty place, no matter how much we try to sweep up at the end of the shift. We spend most of our time looking at threads and checking the patterns. My brother handles the workers and I look after the stock levels. We’ve been here since the estate first opened up. It’s not a place for visitors really, it’s just a place for hard work. We have big rolls of lace stacked up everywhere in the corners. Sometimes we trip over them when we are in a hurry. It’s a lot of physical work, moving heavy things around and packing them into cardboard boxes. We don't have any awards on the wall or a fancy mission statement written down. We just make sure the machines are oiled properly and the work gets done before we go home. The heat in the summer is something else inside these sheds, but we have big exhaust fans that help a little bit. It’s just a regular day-to-day business for our family. We aren't doing anything world-changing, just keeping the production going. It's how we make our living.
