If you’ve ever been to the Surat Textile Market, you know how loud it gets. Our shop is on the ground floor, right in the thick of things on Ring Road. We deal with a lot of movement. Boxes coming in, rolls of fabric going out to the trucks. It’s a lot of lifting and shouting to be heard over the traffic outside. Amrut Siddhi isn't a place for sitting around. We have rolls of fashion fabrics leaning against every wall. The floor is usually covered in scrap threads. We spend the morning checking what arrived from the mills. Some days the heat in the market is really bad, so we keep the fans going at full speed. We know the other shopkeepers around T-1120. We trade news about prices and who’s buying what this week. It’s a fast life here. You have to be quick or the transporters will leave without your bundles. We don't have a fancy display. People come in, look at the material, and we negotiate right there. It’s practical work. My clothes are always covered in lint by the time I head home. We just focus on getting the orders right and making sure the colors match what was asked for. It's how things work in Surat. Every day is the same rush from morning till the market closes and we finally lock up for the night.
