Gupta Dairy

Being at Saket 8, right by the Sabji Mandi, means we see the world wake up. Gupta Dairy is right in the middle of it. We get the milk deliveries very early when it’s still dark outside. You can hear the crates clinking as they are unloaded. By the time the vegetable market next door starts getting busy, we are already open and serving the first customers. It’s a lot of cold water and heavy cans. We keep the milk and the curd in the big refrigerators. The floor is always a bit wet from the ice and the cleaning, so I have to wear rubber boots sometimes. People come from all over Saket to get their daily supplies. They bring their own bags or containers. It’s a lot of shouting back and forth because the Sabji Mandi is so loud with people bargaining for tomatoes and potatoes. I don't mind the noise; it makes the day go by faster. We don't have much time for sitting down until later in the morning. My family has been doing this for a long time. We know who wants double cream and who wants the thin milk. It’s all about the daily routine at shop number 8. It’s not a fancy life, but people need their milk every day, so we are always here. Even when it rains, we are open at the Mandi.
