We’ve been here at Gate No. 375 in Salgare for quite some time now. People around here know the yard mostly by the stacks of cement pipes and blocks sitting near the entrance. It gets pretty dusty, especially when the wind picks up across the open space. The crew usually starts early in the morning before the sun gets too hot because working with wet cement and heavy molds is backbreaking work once midday hits. Most of the guys live nearby, so they just walk or bike over. We don’t have fancy machines for everything; a lot of what we do involves manual pouring and making sure the finish is okay. The yard isn't much to look at, just gravel and grey concrete everywhere, but it’s functional. Sometimes we have issues with the water supply or a truck gets stuck in the mud during the rainy season, which sets things back a bit. We just handle orders as they come in from local builders or farmers who need stuff for their land. There’s no big office here, just a small desk where we keep the papers and a bench for when someone stops by to talk about a project. It’s mostly just the sound of the mixer running and the clinking of metal tools. We try to keep things organized but with the volume of sand and grit coming in every day, there’s always a bit of a mess to clean up. It’s just how it goes in this line of work.
