Our place is down at 14, Kalarampatti Main Road. It’s an engineering shop, so there is always some kind of noise coming from the machines. We’ve been Sri Venkatachalam Engineering Works for a good bit of time. The building is old and shows its age, but it works for what we need. Most of us here have grease under our fingernails all day. It’s just the nature of the work. Kalarampatti Main Road is usually packed with trucks and people moving things, so it gets dusty. We open up the big doors in the morning to let some air in, though it doesn't help much when the machines are running hot. We aren't big on corporate meetings or anything like that. We just talk over the sound of the lathes or while we are having a quick break in the back. Sometimes the power goes out and we just sit outside on the bench until it comes back. It's not a shiny office. There are stacks of metal scrap in the corners and the floor is stained with oil that won’t come out. We just keep our heads down and handle the engineering tasks that come our way. People stop by, ask if we can fix this or that, and we see what we can do. It's a simple way to spend the day here at the shop.
