Umesh Thakur

My name is Umesh Thakur and I run this little shop in Ormanjhi. It is right here in Ranchi, not too far from the main road. I’ve been cutting hair for a long time now. People around here just call me by my name. My shop isn't big. It’s just a room with what I need to do my work. I have my scissors, my combs, and a chair that has seen better days but is still comfortable enough. In a place like Ormanjhi, everyone knows everyone else. I hear all the stories about the farms and the families. Sometimes kids come in for their first haircut and they’re a bit scared, so I have to be patient. I don’t have any assistants, it is just me. I handle everything from opening up to cleaning the floor at night. The winters here in Ranchi get a bit cold, so I keep the door closed then. Most days, I just sit outside on a stool when there are no customers. I watch the cars go by and think about things. It’s a slow pace of life but it suits me fine.
