Rup Nikhar Hair Cutting Saloon is over on Ranchi Road in the Ratu area. It’s been sitting on this stretch for some time now. Being in Ratu means we see a lot of people passing through on their way into Ranchi or heading back home. The road is always loud with trucks and cars, but we are used to it by now. Inside the shop, things are pretty straightforward. We have the basic tools and a few mirrors on the wall. It’s not one of those fancy places you see in the mall. It’s just a local spot for a haircut. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we have to open the door wide to let the light in, but we manage. My hands are usually busy from morning until late evening. Neighbors stop by to chat even if they don’t need a cut. We talk about the weather or how the local market is doing. The name on the board says Rup Nikhar, which sounds a bit fancy, but we are just regular people working hard. We’ve seen the road change over the years, more buildings going up and more traffic every month. But the shop stays pretty much the same. We sweep up the hair at the end of the day, lock the shutters, and do it all again tomorrow. It’s a simple routine and it works for us and the people who live around here.
