Mangal Hair Cutting Salon is a small spot at Lowadih Chowk on Tata Road in Ranchi. This is a busy junction where the trucks and buses are always passing through on their way out of Namkum. It can get pretty dusty and loud outside, but inside the shop, it’s just the sound of the scissors and the radio. I’ve had this place for several years now. It’s not a large salon with different rooms or anything like that. It is just one open space with a couple of chairs and a big mirror that covers most of the wall. We do straightforward haircuts for the men and kids in the neighborhood. Some people come in for a head massage after a long day of work, and I try to do my best with that. The chairs are old and the leather is a bit worn out, but they are still comfortable enough for a twenty-minute sit. We don't have any fancy signs or advertisements. The name is just painted on the front. Most of my customers live within walking distance, so we end up talking about things happening in Namkum or the traffic on Tata Road. It’s a basic shop for people who aren't looking for anything complicated. I open early and stay until the street lights come on, just doing the work that needs to be done to keep the business going.
