If you find yourself in Rajkot near Phulchhab Chowk, you’ve probably seen the Star Plaza. We are up on the ninth floor, office 926. It’s a busy building with a lot of different people coming and going all day long. Being Tirupati Agri Brokers means we spend a whole lot of time on our phones. We sit between the guys growing the crops and the people who want to buy them. It’s a lot of talking and a lot of writing down numbers on scraps of paper. The view from the window is mostly just more buildings and the busy street below, which can get pretty loud during rush hour. Our office isn't very big, just enough room for a few desks and some chairs for visitors. We keep a pot of tea going most of the time because folks like to sit and talk for a while before they make any deals. It’s a lot of back and forth on prices, checking the weather reports, and seeing what the market is doing in other cities. Sometimes the day goes by so fast we forget to eat lunch until it's nearly evening. We don’t have any fancy signs or anything. Just the name on the door and a lot of folders stacked on the shelves. It’s honest work, even if it’s mostly just talking. We have to keep track of the different harvest seasons across the state. Sometimes the phone rings late into the night when someone is worried about a price drop.
