Gohil Patola Art

The shop is sitting right here in Gram Laxmi Society, just behind the animal hospital off Pedak Road. It’s a bit of a quiet spot usually, though you can hear the traffic from the main road if the windows are open. We’ve been working with Patola fabrics for a long time now. The looms take up a lot of space in the back room and they make a specific rhythmic sound when someone is working them. It’s not a fancy place by any means. There are stacks of dyed silk everywhere and sometimes the floor gets a bit messy with thread scraps. Most days start with a cup of tea while we look at what needs finishing. The light comes in pretty strong in the afternoons which helps when you’re trying to see the fine details of a pattern. People from around Laxmi Society stop by sometimes just to see what’s on the frame. It’s a slow process and you can't really rush it. The colors are bright but the work is tiring on the eyes. We just keep at it day after day. It’s mostly just us here, handling the silk and making sure the patterns don't get messed up. There’s always a bit of dust because of the construction nearby, but we try to keep the fabric covered. It’s just a regular workspace where we do our thing and hope the weather stays decent so the silk stays dry.
