Tata Steel

Our spot is in Patikhali, East Midnapur, right near the Haldia Dock. It's a very industrial area. There is always noise from the ships and the trucks moving around. We deal with steel products here. It's heavy work and it gets quite dirty. We aren't the main headquarters; we are just this specific location by the dock. The air smells like salt and metal most of the time. We have stacks of steel sitting around waiting to be moved. It’s not a place for a suit and tie. Most of us wear work boots and rugged clothes. We've got big cranes and heavy machinery that we use every day. The weather can be tough being so close to the water. When it rains, everything gets muddy and slippery. We just keep going though. There’s a rhythm to the dock work that we are a part of. We don't have a big fancy lobby for visitors. If you come here, you're usually here to pick something up or drop something off. We keep track of the inventory on clipboards and simple logs. It's about getting the metal moved from the yard to the transport. It's a basic part of the local economy. We've been at this Patikhali location for a good while. Everyone around here knows the site. It is loud and busy but it is what we do. We get the work done regardless of the heat.
