Taal Saundarya Tabla Classes

Our tabla classes are located right in Kothrud. It’s not a big school, just a space where we sit down and play. The drums take up most of the room. We’ve been teaching here for some time. People from around the neighborhood walk over. It's mostly about the rhythm and getting the hand positions right. We don't have air conditioning, just a couple of fans that rattle a bit. You get used to it. The floor is where we spend most of our time. It can be hard on the back if you aren't used to it. We have different batches throughout the week. Sometimes it’s quiet and other times there are three or four students hitting the skins at once. It gets loud. We don't do much advertising, word of mouth usually works for us in Kothrud. If you're looking for something fancy, this isn't it. We just have the instruments and some mats. We try to keep the tablas in good shape, replacing the heads when they get too worn out. It’s a simple routine every day. We open up in the morning, sweep the floor, and wait for the first student. Some people stay for an hour, others longer if they are preparing for something. We just like the sound of the drums. It’s a steady life here at the Kothrud center. We just enjoy the music and teaching anyone who wants to learn the rhythm.
