We are based at Ashok Laxman Surve’s house, number 359, in Karmotilal. That’s up in the Mulshi area, not too far from Pune but it feels like a different world. The hills around here are beautiful, but the farming can be tough when the monsoon hits hard. We started this company because we wanted to have a better way to get our produce down to the markets. It’s mostly small farmers here working together. Our office is just a comfortable space where we can keep our records dry and have a cup of tea while we plan the next week. We don't have any fancy titles or suits. We are usually in our field clothes. We talk about the price of rice and who has the best seedlings this year. Sometimes the roads get washed out and we have to wait a few days to move anything. We’ve learned to be patient. We don't spend money on advertising or anything like that. People know us because we’ve been here our whole lives. We just focus on getting the work done and making sure everyone gets a fair deal for their labor. It’s a quiet life for the most part, except when the harvest is on. Then everyone is busy from dawn to dusk. We just do what needs to be done to keep the business moving along and the families fed.
