Out here at Gat No 246 in Chimbli, things are a bit quieter than the city, but the workshop itself is usually pretty loud. Proarc Welding And Cutting Systems is basically a big shed where we deal with a lot of metal. If you’re coming from Pune, it’s a bit of a drive out to Jadhav Vasti, especially with the trucks on the road. We spend a lot of time with masks on, looking at blue sparks. It gets hot, especially in the afternoons when the sun hits the roof. We have these big cutting systems that take up most of the floor space. It’s dusty work and your clothes usually end up smelling like burnt metal by five o'clock. We don't have a fancy reception or anything like that. There’s a desk near the front where we keep the logs and some old chairs for when we take a break. Most of the guys live nearby in Tal Khed, so they know the shortcuts around the village roads. We do a lot of heavy lifting and moving parts around with the crane. Sometimes the power flickers, which is a pain, but we have the backup ready. It’s just honest work, day in and day out, making sure the cuts are straight and the welds hold up. We keep a stash of biscuits in the drawer for the tea breaks.
