Oven Art Bakery

The ovens at Oven Art Bakery stay hot most of the day. We are located over in Sector 19 of Pradhikaran, right near Sane Chowk and Koyananagar 5. It’s a busy corner of the neighborhood. We start baking long before the sun comes up because people want their bread fresh in the morning. Our clothes usually have a bit of flour on them by ten am. We make different kinds of toasts, cakes, and those butter biscuits that people like with their tea. The shop has a large glass front so you can see all the racks of buns and loaves lined up. It’s a bit cramped in the back where the mixing happens, but we manage. My uncle started this place and I took over after I finished school. We don't use a lot of fancy ingredients, just the basics like flour, yeast, and sugar. Some days the cakes turn out better than others, that's just how baking goes when you do it by hand. We have a small table in the corner where some of the older men from the area sit and talk for hours. The Dhole Patil Road area is usually quite noisy, but inside it smells like yeast and warm sugar. We don't have a delivery van or anything, people just walk over from the nearby houses. We wrap everything in plain brown paper or plastic bags. It’s a simple life running a bakery here. We keep the floor swept but flour always finds its way back down.
