Being located in the Marble Market area of Bhawani Peth means there is always noise outside. Our spot at C1/6 383 is usually filled with the sounds of trucks loading and unloading nearby. We handle a mix of stationery and gift items, so our days are mostly spent organizing pens, notebooks, and various little trinkets. It’s a bit of a tight squeeze in the shop because we try to keep a lot of stock on hand for the students and office workers who stop by. The floor is old tile and the walls are covered with shelves from floor to ceiling. Sometimes it’s hard to reach the top stuff without the rickety ladder we’ve had for years. We aren't trying to be a big department store or anything like that. It’s just a local place where you can get a notebook or a birthday card. The morning starts with sweeping the dust that blows in from the market road. Then we check what sold yesterday and try to fill the gaps. People come in asking for things we might have buried in a back box, so there is a lot of digging around. It’s honest work and we like the people who visit us. Bhawani Peth is a crowded place, but it feels like home to us after all this time. We just keep the doors open and wait for the next person to need a pen or a small gift.
