If you go to Gupte Market in Mukund Nagar, you’ll find us at shop 23. It’s a busy little corner of Pune, and there’s always something happening right outside the shop door. Inside, we have the usual setup with the big mirrors, the adjustable chairs, and all the clippers and scissors laid out on the counters. The smell of talcum powder and shaving cream is pretty much stuck in the air here. We’ve been cutting hair for the men in this neighborhood for a long time. People come in, sit down, and we just get to work. There’s usually a radio playing in the background, or maybe the news on a small TV in the corner. It’s a place where people talk about their day or just sit quietly while we do the trimming. We don’t have fancy names for what we do, it’s just a haircut or a shave. The floor gets covered in hair pretty quickly, so someone is always sweeping up between customers. On weekends, the bench outside gets full of people waiting their turn, and the tea guy from the market comes by every hour. It’s a simple business. We open up in the morning, clean the mirrors, and wait for the first person to walk in. Mukund Nagar has changed a lot, but the shop feels mostly the same as it did years ago. We just keep our tools sharp and stay busy through the afternoon rush.
