M. K. Engineers

You can find us at No. 1147 in Shukrawar Peth. We are right there in Subhash Nagar, tucked away in Lane No. 1. This part of Pune is always crowded, and the lanes are narrow, so getting big machines in and out is always a bit of a struggle. M. K. Engineers has been around this neighborhood for years. The shop smells like cutting oil and metal shavings, which is something you never really get out of your clothes. We have a few old lathes and some newer tools that we try to keep running smoothly. Usually, the day starts at nine when we roll up the heavy iron shutters. There is a lot of noise once the work begins, so we have to shout to hear each other. The walls have calendars from five years ago still hanging there. We don't really bother with decorating the place. Our customers are mostly other workshop owners or people from the nearby industries who need a specific part fixed or made. We take our lunch breaks together sitting on wooden stools. Sometimes we talk about the old days when the street wasn't so packed with scooters. It gets dark in the shop by five, so we use some big tube lights to see what we are doing. We just try to do the work right and go home. There is always a pile of scrap metal in the corner that we need to clear out one day, but we never find the time.
