Working at Nana Peth on Lamington Road 2 means you’re always in the middle of a crowd and lots of noise. Our shop is small and usually smells like old car batteries and scorched copper wire. We spend most of our time bent over open car hoods or sitting on low stools trying to fix a stubborn alternator that won't behave. There are boxes of fuses, bulbs, and wiring harnesses stacked almost to the ceiling, and sometimes it takes us a few minutes to find exactly what we need in the mess. Our hands are almost always black from engine grease, and the rags we use to wipe them never seem to get fully clean. It’s a messy business, but vehicles are always having electrical problems, so there is always some work to do. We don’t have a fancy waiting area for customers; they usually just stand on the sidewalk or lean against their cars while we work on the wiring. The noise from the traffic on Lamington Road is constant, so we have to talk pretty loud to be heard over the honking horns. Sometimes we have to go and hunt for specific parts from other shops nearby when we run out of something. It’s a lot of trial and error with some of these older cars, but we eventually get the lights to turn on or the engine to crank. We just take one job at a time and fix what is broken.
