Living and working around Tilak Road near the Malerkotla Road intersection in Khanna means you are always surrounded by noise and people. D Shreepads Classes is right in the thick of it. I start my day by opening the heavy doors and letting the smell of the morning air in, even if it’s a bit smoky from the traffic. The rooms we have are long and narrow, which makes it a bit of a challenge to fit everyone in comfortably, but we make it work. The walls are painted a dull cream color and have a few scuff marks from where people lean their bags. I have an old wooden chair that creaks every time I sit down, but I’ve had it for years and I’m used to it. The ceiling fans are old and have a steady rhythm that you stop noticing after ten minutes. I spend a lot of my time organizing the schedules on a big whiteboard that is starting to get stained. Students from the nearby areas come in, often still talking about things that happened at the market or on their way here. We have a small shelf with some reference books that are missing their covers. It’s a very lived-in space. Outside, you can hear the fruit vendors shouting their prices and the constant rumble of trucks heading towards Malerkotla Road. It isn’t a fancy environment, but it serves its purpose for everyone who comes through the door. I usually lock up as the sun is setting.
