The shop is right here in the 411001 area of Pune. It’s not a very big place, just enough room for a few chairs and the big mirrors we have bolted to the wall. We’ve been cutting hair for a long time. Every morning we sweep up the floor from the day before and get the towels ready. The smell of aftershave and cheap talcum powder stays in the air all day long. Most of our customers are guys from the neighborhood who have been coming to us since they were just kids. We talk about the weather or whatever is happening on the street outside. It gets busy on weekends, especially in the mornings when everyone wants to get a trim for whatever they have planned. Sometimes the clippers get too hot and we have to switch to another pair. We don’t have fancy coffee or a waiting lounge with magazines. There are just a few plastic stools by the door where people sit and read the paper while they wait their turn. The lighting is a bit bright, but it helps us see what we are doing with the scissors. We try to keep things moving so no one has to wait out on the sidewalk for too long. It’s an honest way to spend the day, just chatting and working. If you walk past, you’ll probably see us leaning against the door frame when things are quiet.
