The Sofa Zone

Out here on Ganga Dham Road, near the Mauli Hotel, we spend most of our time at The Sofa Zone surrounded by foam, wood, and a lot of fabric scraps. The shop at Sr. No. 621/3/5 is right by the Kondhwa bypass, so there is a constant stream of trucks and cars roaring past outside. Inside, it’s a bit of a mess most days because building furniture is a dusty business. We have old sofas that people brought in for repair sitting next to brand new frames that we are just starting on. Our hands are usually covered in some kind of glue or dust from the wood saw. It’s hard work and your back definitely feels it by the end of the day. We don't have a fancy air-conditioned showroom; we just have the shop floor where the work actually happens. Sometimes customers come in and sit on the frames to see if the springs are right, and we talk to them while we work. The location across from the Farm House Restaurant makes it easy to find, even if the traffic on Ganga Dham Road is a bit much. We just keep our heads down and focus on getting the staples in straight and the cushions stuffed properly. It’s not a glamorous job, but there is something good about seeing a pile of wood turn into something people can actually sit on. We have been doing this for years.
