We are right across the road from Uttam Sweets here in Khadakwasla. It is a good spot because everyone knows where the sweet shop is. My shop, Bhawani Gift, is where I spend most of my waking hours. It is packed with all sorts of things, from small toys to framed pictures and household knick-knacks. The shelves are high and sometimes I need the small ladder to reach the stuff at the top. It gets quite busy on weekends when people are out and about. The noise from the street is always there, but you get used to it. I try to keep the glass cases clean so the items look decent. It is just me and sometimes a family member helping out. We do not have a fancy display system, just things placed where they fit. Often, I am rearranging the front window to show off the new clocks or vases we got in. People coming from the sweet shop often wander over to see what we have. It is a simple life running a gift store in this neighborhood. I know the other shopkeepers around here well. We keep an eye on each other’s places. If you need a gift and do not want to go all the way into the city, you just come here. The door stays open to let the breeze in, even if it brings a bit of dust. It is just a practical little shop for the locals.
