If you head over to Shaniwar Peth, specifically near the Kalidas Mill Char Rasta, you’ll find Advocate Bhalchandra H Nikte at number 335. This part of the city is always full of life, and our office is right in the middle of it. It’s an old building, so the walls are thick and it stays relatively cool even when the sun is beating down outside. Inside, the space is packed with shelves that hold years’ worth of legal files. We don’t have much in the way of decoration, unless you count the calendars hanging on the wall. The work we do is mostly about helping people navigate their legal issues without making things more complicated than they need to be. We spend a lot of time on the phone or writing out notes by hand before typing them up. It’s a small operation, and we like it that way because it means we know exactly what is happening with every file on the desk. Sometimes we have to move stacks of books just to find a place to put a cup of tea. The traffic at Char Rasta can be a nightmare in the evenings, but during the day it’s just the background noise of our working lives. People drop in from the surrounding streets, often without an appointment, just looking for a bit of advice. We do what we can to help them out. It’s a practical, no-nonsense kind of office.
