Bhathal Beej Stores is located at Rajpura Road 1, and it’s a bit different from your average shop because we focus so much on the seasons. Since we handle seeds, the whole rhythm of the place changes depending on what time of year it is. When planting season hits, it’s absolute madness from sunrise until late at night. Farmers come in with dirt on their boots, talking about the rain or the lack of it. There are sacks of seeds everywhere, and the smell of the earth and dried grain is quite strong. I spend a lot of time checking the labels and making sure nothing has gotten damp. The floor is almost never clean because there’s always a bit of spilled seed or dust from the heavy bags. My desk is covered in papers and old calendars where I mark down delivery dates and notes about the crops. Rajpura Road is a busy spot, so there’s always someone stopping by to ask advice on what to plant. I don't always have the answers, but we talk it out anyway. It’s a practical kind of job. My back usually aches by the time I lock up, but it’s good to see the stuff we sell turning into actual crops later on. The shop is old, the walls could use a fresh coat of paint, but for now, we just keep the focus on the sacks and the people who need them.
