People around here in Kalpathy know us as the small school near Sekharipuram. We have been here in Palakkad for quite a while now. The building is not very big, just some classrooms and a small area where the kids play during the break. You can hear the children reciting their lessons if you walk past our gate in the morning. It gets quite hot here in the afternoons, so we try to keep the rooms as cool as we can with the fans. Our teachers are mostly local people who have lived in this part of town for years. They know the families and the kids by name. We don't have fancy buses or anything like that, but the parents bring the children on their scooters or they just walk if they live nearby. Every morning starts with a small prayer and then the regular classes begin. Sometimes the plumbing gives us trouble or the desks need a bit of repair, but we manage to get things fixed eventually. It is just a simple place for learning where things move at a quiet pace. We have the usual blackboards and chalk, and the kids carry those heavy bags like everywhere else. It’s a bit noisy when the final bell rings at the end of the day, but that is just how it is. We just focus on getting through the portions and making sure the children are doing their homework.
