It’s the kind of spot where Yashpal and Ajay Kumar have been working together for a long time. Chandni Chowk is always loud and crowded, but inside the market, it’s a different kind of busy. We handle a lot of cloth every single day. There are rolls of fabric everywhere you look in our shop. It might look like a bit of a mess to someone from outside, but we know exactly where every single piece is kept. We start early, usually before the heat gets too bad in the narrow lanes. A lot of our time goes into talking to the suppliers and checking the quality of what comes in. We don't spend money on fancy decorations because that's not what the cloth business is about here. It's about having the right material when someone asks for it. The walls are a bit old and the ceiling is high, typical for these old buildings. We share tea with the shopkeepers next door and talk about how the market is doing. It’s hard work, standing on your feet all day, but it’s what we know. We just keep doing what we’ve been doing for years without much fuss. It is just how we live and work.
