You’ll find us at 9-A on the first floor of the New Gurunanak Market. It’s right behind the Bata Shoe Co. building in Kashmere Gate. If you know the area, you know how crowded it gets. There’s people everywhere and the narrow lanes are always full of cycles and carts. Our place is up the stairs, and it’s usually quite a hub of activity. Since we handle fertilizer, there’s a certain smell in the air that you get used to after five minutes. It’s a busy market life. We spend a lot of time talking to farmers and traders who come in from all over. The office is small, packed with ledgers and sample bags. It’s not the most organized looking place, but we know where everything is. My father started this, and we’ve stayed in the same spot because everyone knows this market. Sometimes the noise from the street below is so loud we have to shout a bit to be heard. We don't have fancy air conditioning, just a few old ceiling fans that keep the air moving. It’s honest work. We deal with the seasons and the crops. When it’s planting time, we barely have a minute to sit down. The rest of the year is for catching up on the paperwork and getting ready for the next round. It's just the way it has always been here behind the Bata shop in this old market.
