Gobind Bag Works is up on the first floor, at 5394/15 in Janta Market. Being in Sadar Bazar means it’s always a madhouse outside. You have to climb a narrow set of stairs to reach us. It’s not the easiest place to get to, especially when the stairs are crowded with people carrying heavy bundles. Our workspace is pretty cramped. We have sewing machines lined up by the windows to catch whatever light we can. The ceiling fans don't do much against the Delhi heat, but we are used to it. We make bags of all sorts, mostly in bulk. There’s no showroom here, just piles of finished goods and raw fabric. I’ve been working here since I was a teenager. It’s a loud environment with the constant clicking of the machines and people shouting in the market below. We don't have a fancy logo or a mission statement. We just try to finish the work on time so the wholesalers don't get annoyed. Sometimes the thread tangles or a machine breaks down, and everything stops while we fix it. It’s frustrating but that’s part of the job. We drink a lot of water and keep the windows open. It’s just a basic workshop where we spend our days making things. Janta Market is a tough place to work, but it’s where we belong. We finish our work, lock up, and head home through the crowded streets.
