Chandni Chowk is always a bit of a mess, but we’ve been at 535 Katra Neel for years. Being near the Town Hall helps people find us, even with all the narrow lanes and crowds. It’s a small shop, like most in this part of Delhi. We have to stack our stock high up to the ceiling because there just isn't enough room on the ground. It’s a bit dusty, and the walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but we’re usually too busy to worry about that. People come to us because they know we’ve been here a long time. We don't have fancy displays or air conditioning that works all the time. It gets hot in the summer, especially with the iron roof nearby. We just keep the fans going and get on with the day’s work. My cousin handles the accounts and I look after the customers. It’s a simple arrangement that hasn't changed much since we started. Katra Neel is a tight-knit place where everyone knows everyone else’s business. We like the energy of the market, even when it’s exhausting. You see all sorts of people walking through. We don't use any big words to describe what we do. We just sell stuff and try to be fair about it. If you can navigate the rickshaws and the crowds, you’ll find us tucked in our corner. It's a loud life here but we enjoy the bustle.
