About Om Prakash – Agriculture & Farming in North 24 Parganas
Over here at the Dhananjay Market Complex in Kakdwip, things are always moving. My name is Om Prakash and I run this little shop. It’s a typical market setting, lots of small stalls squeezed together. We don't have much room to move around, so we have to be very organized with how we stack our goods. The complex gets very crowded on market days, and it can be hard to even walk through the aisles. I spend most of my day sitting on a small wooden bench near the front. We deal with whatever the local demand is at the time. I don't have a big team helping me, it’s mostly just me and sometimes my brother. We keep the accounts in a simple notebook and use a calculator that’s seen better days. The roof leaks a little when there’s a heavy storm, so we keep some plastic sheets ready to cover the stock. It’s not the most modern place, but it serves the purpose. We don't use any fancy sales talk. If someone wants something, they ask the price, we tell them, and that’s it. It’s an honest way to make a living. We’ve been in this complex since it opened, and we’ve seen shops come and go. We just stay focused on our own work and try to keep things simple. It’s a busy life, but it’s what we know and we don't complain about the long hours.
