Marble Art

Out here at Plant D-26 in Sector Xi of Gautam Budh Nagar, the sound of stone being cut is basically the background music of our lives. We’ve been set up in this part of the district for quite some time. It's an industrial patch, so there’s always something moving or banging around. At Marble Art, we deal with a lot of heavy slabs. You have to be careful where you step and always watch your fingers. The air usually has that thin mist from the water saws, which feels okay when it’s hot but gets a bit damp in the winter months. We aren't big on decorations in the workspace; it’s mostly just stacks of marble and tools leaning against the walls. The floor is never really clean, no matter how much we sweep it, because there’s always more stone being worked on. Our crew is small and most of us have been working together for years, so we don't need to say much to get the job done. Sometimes people come by looking for specific pieces for their houses, and we just show them what’s sitting in the yard. Sector Xi isn't the prettiest place, but it's where the work happens. We eat our lunch sitting on whatever flat stone is nearby. It’s a bit of a rough environment, but it’s what we know. We just focus on getting the cuts right and making sure the slabs don't crack while moving them.
