Our yard is at No. X7 in Loha Mandi, which is part of the Naraina area. If you’ve ever been to Loha Mandi, you know it is all about iron and steel. It is a rough and tumble kind of place with heavy trucks moving in and out all day long. We are right in the thick of it. We do engineering work, which mostly means handling large pieces of metal and getting them ready for whatever they are going to be used for. The air is usually thick with dust and the sound of metal hitting metal. It’s a very physical job. We spend a lot of time outdoors or under the open shed. We don’t have a fancy office with air conditioning. We just have a small cabin where we keep the logs and take our breaks. Our team is small, mostly guys who have been doing this kind of heavy work for their whole lives. We don’t talk much while we are working because it is too loud anyway. We just use hand signals or shout over the noise. By the end of the day, we are usually pretty tired and covered in grit. It’s a hard way to make a living, but it’s what we know. We don’t try to be anything we aren’t. We just show up at X7, do the heavy lifting, and make sure the metal is moving.
