Down in Chandan Hulla, Mehrauli, our school stands as a simple building for the local community. It’s not like the big schools you see in the center of Delhi. Here, things are a bit more basic and quiet. The road to the school is often dusty, especially when the wind picks up. We have a decent amount of space, but it’s mostly just open ground where the kids play. The building itself has been expanded over the years, so some parts look newer than others. The classrooms have wooden benches that have been around for a long time. We don’t have air conditioning, just big fans that hum all day long. The kids come from the nearby houses in Mehrauli and Chandan Hulla. They are a lively bunch, and they don't seem to mind the heat or the dust. We have a small library, though we are always looking for more books to put on the shelves. The teachers are mostly local people who understand the background of the students. It’s a practical place. We focus on the basics and try to make sure everyone learns their lessons. There is a lot of chatter during the lunch break when everyone sits out in the shade of the building. It’s a hard-working atmosphere, and we just do our best with what we have. It’s an honest way to spend the day, teaching the kids from around here. We just hope they take something useful away from their time with us and go on to do okay.
