Working out of Jia Sarai 13 is interesting because the whole area is just filled with students and books. M K Tutors is right in the middle of all that chaos. The office is basically a room filled with stacks of paper and old notebooks. We spend a lot of time just sitting around the main table talking through things. It is not a corporate office at all. The curtains are a bit dusty and the light flickers sometimes if the wiring acts up. There is a small pantry in the back where we keep a kettle for making coffee when the nights get long. Jia Sarai is always crowded, so getting to the front door can be a bit of a struggle if you are in a hurry. We know most of the people on this street by name. Sometimes we stay open late because someone needs help with something and we do not mind sticking around. It is a very informal environment. People just walk in, pull up a chair, and start talking. I usually have a radio playing low in the background, mostly just for some noise. The floor is concrete and we have a couple of plastic plants that have been there since we opened. It is a practical space for practical work. No one wears a suit here. We just wear what is comfortable and get on with the day’s tasks. Sometimes we order food from the dhaba downstairs when we are too busy to go out. That is how it usually goes. It keeps us going until we finish up for the evening.
