Gupta Flour Mills

Our mill is at 765 Gurudwara Road in Kotla Mubarakpur. You can usually hear Gupta Flour Mills before you see it because the grinding machines make a very steady, heavy thumping noise. The air inside the shop is always thick with the smell of ground wheat. Everything in here is covered in a thin layer of white flour, from the light switches to our own hair. We spend most of the day pouring grain into the hoppers and watching the bags fill up at the bottom. It’s a very physical job, lifting heavy sacks of wheat and corn all day long. People from the neighborhood bring their own bags of grain and wait while we grind it for them. We have an old scale that we use to weigh everything, and we have to be careful to keep it clean so it stays accurate. The shop is narrow and has high ceilings, which helps a little with the heat, but it still gets very stuffy in the summer months. We keep a big earthen pot of cool water in the corner for anyone who is thirsty. There’s no fancy branding here, just the machines and the sacks of flour stacked against the walls. We've been on Gurudwara Road for a long time, and we know exactly how each customer likes their flour ground. It’s simple work, but it keeps us busy from early morning until late in the evening.
