Gulab Sweet

Gulab Sweet is located at Lodhi Road Mehar Chand Market 19. This area has become quite popular lately with a lot of new stores, but we have stayed pretty much the same. Our shop is small and the walls are painted a simple off-white color. We mostly focus on making gulab jamuns in large batches. We keep them in a big container filled with syrup and you have to be careful when serving them so the juice doesn't splash everywhere. The floor can get a bit slippery if we are not careful. We have a couple of benches outside on the sidewalk because there isn't really any room to sit inside. The kitchen is right behind the counter so everyone can see the smoke and hear the frying. It is very hot work, especially during the monsoon when the air is thick. My son helps me with the money and the orders, while I stay near the stove. We do not have a big menu or anything. We just do what we know how to do. Sometimes we close early if we are tired or if we run out of ingredients. The market is busy in the evenings when people are out for a walk. We see the same faces every day and it feels like a small community here despite being in a big city. We just keep our heads down and do the work.
