If you walk down Main Karawal Nagar Road in Delhi, you’ll find our primary school. It sits right there where the traffic is always moving and the horns are honking. It’s a lower primary school, so we deal with the really young ones who are just starting out. The noise from the road is something we’ve just gotten used to over the years. Inside the gates, it’s a different world with small kids running around in their uniforms. The classrooms are basic, with wooden desks and blackboards that always have some chalk dust on the floor. We spend our mornings teaching the alphabet and simple math. It’s a lot of repetition and making sure the children stay in their seats. The staff here consists of people who have been in the teaching line for a long time. We know the families in Karawal Nagar pretty well because their older siblings probably came here too. Sometimes the rain makes things difficult because the road outside gets muddy, but we manage. We don’t have a lot of extra resources, so we make do with what the government provides us. It’s a humble place, honestly. We focus on the kids getting their midday meals and learning their lessons. There’s no big secret to how we run things, we just follow the daily timetable and wait for the final bell to ring so we can all go home and rest for the next day.
