Chaman Lal Sachdeva

I spend most of my days at the Delhi High Court, specifically in Chamber 118. It’s a place full of paper. Everywhere you look, there are files stacked up on desks and chairs. If you’ve ever been to the court, you know how it is—everyone is in a hurry, and there’s always a lot of noise in the hallways. My work is mostly about those files. I read through cases, prepare for hearings, and talk to people who are going through some pretty difficult legal situations. It’s not like the movies. There is a lot of waiting around for a judge to call your name. I’ve been doing this for a long time now. You get used to the smell of old paper and the taste of the canteen tea. People come to Chamber 118 when they have a problem they can’t solve on their own. I listen to their stories and try to figure out what the law says about it. It’s a lot of research and making sure the dates are right. Sometimes the court is frustrating and things move very slowly. That’s just the nature of the legal system here. I don’t have a big team of assistants. It’s mostly just me and the documents. I just try to do the work that needs doing every day and keep things moving forward for the people who come to see me.
