Ganga Bricks

Down on Jonnavada Road in Buchireddypalam Mandal, we have our brick kiln set up. We are right near the Government Elementary School, so we see a lot of activity when classes are starting or letting out. The area is mostly open fields, which is good for the space we need. Making bricks is a long process that starts with the right kind of soil. We spend a lot of time digging and mixing. It is a dirty job and the soot from the fire gets everywhere. Our clothes never stay clean for long. We have a routine that hasn't changed much in years. The weather is the biggest factor in our day. If it is too humid, the bricks won't dry. If it rains, the whole yard is a disaster. We just take it as it comes. The people in the Mandal know where we are. We don't do much in the way of talking; we just show the stacks to anyone who comes by. Sometimes we sit under the tree near the school gate to get some shade and have a bit of lunch. It is a simple life and the work is hard on the back. But we have been doing it this way for a long time. We just keep the kiln burning and hope for a good season without too many storms. That is about all there is to it.
