Site Engineer

Down here in Nagappatinam district, things move a bit slower than in the big cities. We are based in Kumilangatu, which is part of the Puthur Post area in Sirkali Taluk. We use an old building that stays relatively cool during the humid months, though we still rely on a few ceiling fans to keep the air moving. As site engineers, we spend the majority of our hours outdoors, often coming back with sand in our shoes and sunburnt necks. It is hard work but it is what we know. There isn't any marketing team here or anyone writing fancy brochures. We just write our reports on a wooden desk that has been in the family for years. Sometimes we have to travel quite a distance to reach a project, so we are gone for most of the daylight hours. When we are in the office, we are usually checking figures or talking to local contractors on the phone. It is a very direct way of working. We don't use much jargon or try to impress anyone with big words. If the job is done right, that is enough for us. The local tea shop is where we usually take our breaks, and everyone in the village knows who we are. It is a simple life and we enjoy the challenge of building things from the ground up. We just keep our heads down and focus on the daily progress.
