If you head out to Baidipara in the Chandahandi area, you’ll find us working away on our plots. Our group, Chandahandi Farmers Producer Companylimited, is basically just a collection of neighbors trying to make a decent living from the soil. We use Hrushikesh Dash’s place as our home base in Rajkote. It’s nothing special to look at, just a regular house where we keep our documents and have our meetings when the sun gets too hot. Nabarangpur can be a tough place to farm because the rains don't always come when you expect them to. We decided to get together because buying supplies in small amounts was costing us way too much. Now, we try to coordinate things a bit better. We aren't trying to be some huge corporation. We’re just local folks who know every inch of these fields. Sometimes we sit around for hours just talking about the price of grain or why the pests are worse this year. It's a practical way to survive. We don't have any flashy brochures or a website. Most people just know us by name anyway. We work hard, we look out for each other, and we try to get a fair deal for our harvest. It’s honest work, even if it’s backbreaking. We’ve been here for years and we plan on staying here, just taking things one day at a time and hoping for the best for our community.
