Ambuja Cement Limited

Our unit is located in Village Kendua, which is part of the Farakka area in Murshidabad. It’s right in the heart of West Bengal, close to the river. G S Rao is the assistant manager here, and he spends most of his time dealing with the electrical and instrumentation side of things. The office isn't really an office in the city sense. It’s more of a workspace filled with technical manuals, spare parts, and testing equipment. It’s very humid here, and you can always hear the sound of the machines running in the distance. We are responsible for keeping the technical parts of the plant in good shape. It’s a lot of hands-on work. We don't wear suits or ties; we wear rugged clothes that can get dirty. Most of our staff comes from the surrounding villages, so there’s a lot of local talk going on during lunch breaks. We eat our tiffins together and talk about the harvest or the weather. It’s a very grounded way to work. We don't have any big mission statements or corporate slogans on the walls. We just have wiring diagrams and safety posters. It’s a tough job sometimes, especially when something breaks down in the middle of the night, but we just get it fixed and move on to the next thing. The monsoon rain makes the paths around the village quite muddy, but we manage. Sometimes we walk down to the river after work just to get some fresh air away from the plant noise.
